What is the API Scholarship?
API awards scholarship opportunities to exceptional students pursuing careers as Medical Laboratory Scientists (MLS) and Medical Laboratory Technicians (MLT). In 2026, API will be offering eight scholarships:
- (4) $5,000 scholarships for MLS students
- (4) $2,500 scholarships for MLT students
After granting more than 80 scholarships to clinical laboratory science students over the past 18 years, API continues this storied scholarship opportunity to stand out students in their rising junior and/or senior years.
“American Proficiency Institute takes seriously the nation’s need for qualified medical laboratory scientists,” explained Sue Harmer, API President. “It is heartening to see the success of past API Scholarship recipients and their contributions to the clinical laboratory,” noted Harmer, herself a medical technologist. “Supporting the next generation of laboratorians is a responsibility we hold dearly.”

- Winners Notified: June 1, 2026
Who is Eligible?
Students in University or College programs
- MLS – Students who are rising juniors (second year to be completed by July 2026) and rising seniors
- MLT – Students who are rising sophomores (first year to be completed by July 2026)
Students in Hospital-based post-baccalaureate MLS certificate programs
- Self-funded students who have been accepted into a program (completion date in 2027)
