2026 Proficiency Testing Updates & Reporting Resources
January 8, 2026
As laboratories prepare for another year of proficiency testing requirements, American Proficiency Institute (API) continues to enhance the tools, resources, and support services that help laboratories report results accurately, meet regulatory requirements, and reduce administrative workload.
Whether you currently partner with API or are evaluating proficiency testing providers, the following 2026 updates highlight how API supports reliable PT reporting without adding unnecessary complexity to laboratory operations.

CMS Paperless Notifications for CLIA Communications
Effective March 1, 2026
Beginning March 1, 2026, CMS will deliver CLIA-related communications electronically, discontinuing the mailing of paper coupons and certificates. While this change does not modify proficiency testing requirements, laboratories must ensure their CMS contact information is current to avoid missed notifications that could impact compliance. CMS provides forms and online guidance to support the transition, and API encourages laboratories to review their preferences early to ensure uninterrupted communications.
Automating PT Reporting with API DataDirect
Trusted by Laboratory Professionals
Manual entry of proficiency testing results remains the leading cause of PT failures due to transcription and clerical errors. API DataDirect automates PT result submission by allowing laboratories to upload results directly from their LIS or middleware, without installing new software or modifying existing systems.
To date, more than 8 million proficiency testing results have been securely uploaded through API DataDirect, helping laboratories improve accuracy, reduce administrative workload, and avoid common reporting errors.
By eliminating paper forms or duplicate data entry, DataDirect saves valuable staff time while increasing confidence in PT submissions. For laboratories enrolled in API proficiency testing programs, DataDirect is available at no additional cost. API DataDirect Specialists are available to assist with setup and ongoing support.
Free ASCP Continuing Education to Support PT Participants
API also offers free continuing education opportunities that allow laboratory professionals to earn ASCP continuing education credits to maintain certifications while staying current with developments in laboratory medicine. Participants have access to a robust online learning portal and may earn up to 20 credits per year, making continuing education a seamless complement to proficiency testing participation.
Investing in the Future of the Laboratory Workforce
Through MLS and MLT scholarship opportunities, API supports education, workforce development, and long-term career growth within the laboratory profession. The 2026 scholarship application period opens in early March, with additional details to be shared soon.

A Mission-Driven Commitment to Quality
As a nonprofit organization, API reinvests in initiatives that advance laboratory quality, education, and community impact. From reporting technology and educational resources to employee-led charitable efforts, API remains committed to supporting laboratories and the professionals they rely on.
